An Tale of Unexpected Generosity: The Time a Student Allowed Me to Stay on Her Dorm Ground

Back in 2006, I made a trip to the Australian capital for a medical school interview. I assumed to book lodging when I arrived, however once I got there, a large conference was happening and all the backpackers hostels and cheap hotels were completely sold out.

Hailing from the city-state of Singapore, the idea crossed my mind the possibility of bed down in the terminal – but quickly found Canberra airport, unlike Singapore’s, does not operate around the clock. With no idea what my next move should be and growing worried, I boarded a city-bound bus and started wandering near the casino, reasoning I could pass those hours in an establishment that was open 24/7. Admittedly, this plan in the best shape for nailing an interview the following day, yet, as a broke student, luxury accommodation was impossible.

The world needs more people who show such kindness.

Apparently, I appeared out of place because a young woman noticed me wandering around downtown and inquired if everything was alright. I recounted my predicament and right away she suggested I could sleep on the ground in her student dorm at the local university – which was perfect, considering that was where my interview was the following day. She went further by offering me some free dinner: one stuffed baguettes she had taken home her part-time job. I was able to use warm shower facilities and somewhere safe to rest to spend the night.

With hindsight, it’s clear to me what a big chance she took as a young woman letting a man she’d just met sleep on her floor. Back then I was in a bubble of male privilege and not even thinking about things like that. Now, as a father, it astounds me she took that chance – yet incredibly thankful.

Ultimately, I did not study at the Australian National University, and I lost touch with that kind stranger again, but I’ve never forgotten her selfless deed of human compassion. It is my wish the universe has repaid her good deed many times over. Our society requires more folks who show such kindness.
