A bulky Pacific bluefin tuna created waves at the Tokyo's Toyosu fish market this Monday, garnering a unprecedented bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2m; £2.4m) during the venue's first auction of the calendar year.

The winning bid for the 243-kilogram fish was submitted by the operator of a popular sushi restaurant group, which manages restaurants throughout Japan and overseas.

"The year's tuna heralds a prosperous start," remarked the business owner, a notable figure at the yearly new year's auction.

Referred to as the Tuna King, this industry figure is renowned for placing record bids for premium bluefin tuna at these high-profile year-opening auctions.

Bidding Shock and Historic Past

Following the auction, the winner informed journalists that he was "astonished at the amount," stating, "I had thought we would be able to acquire it a little cheaper, but the price escalated rapidly."

This latest acquisition surpasses his previous historic purchases:

  • He bid 56.5 million yen back in 2012.
  • He bid 155 million yen the following year.
  • In 2019, he purchased a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1m).

Despite once commenting that he thought he "overdid it," he has now gone on to shatter his personal record another time.

An Annual Spectacle of Exorbitant Bids

The inaugural auction at the Tokyo fish market is traditionally known for exorbitant prices. Last year, the initial tuna was acquired for 207 million yen by a different sushi chain operator, which announced the fish would be available at its restaurants across Japan.

The intense energy at the fish market during these pre-dawn auctions has evolved into a must-see spectacle in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which started around 05:00 local time, was equally bustling.

Immediate Consumption

The extremely valuable tuna was quickly processed for patrons at the entrepreneur's sushi restaurants shortly after the auction concluded.

"I sense like I've started the year in a good way after eating something so fortune-bringing as the year gets underway," said one happy patron.
