Cowboys Owner Jones Fined $250,000 for ‘Accidental’ Obscene Gesture toward Fans
The NFL has imposed a hefty $250,000 fine on Cowboys proprietor Jones for what he describes as an “inadvertent” obscene gesture directed at fans during a recent contest at the Jets’ stadium.
Viral video clips seemed to capture Jones making an obscene gesture at Jets fans, but Jones maintains he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Dallas supporters in attendance as his team clinched a decisive win.
“That was regrettable. That was kind of an exchange with our fans out in front of us,” Jones explained during a radio appearance. “Present was a swarm of Dallas supporters—not Jets fans, Cowboys fans. The entire stadium was brimming with excitement for the Dallas team.”
Jones additionally clarified that the gesture was completely unintentional, happening amid the excitement following the team’s final touchdown. “I simply put up the wrong digit,” he noted. “The action was accidentally performed. I’m not kidding. If you want to call it unplanned, you can. However, it got corrected rapidly.”
League Precedent for Owner Penalties
This is not the first time an league proprietor has been penalized for inappropriate behavior. Previous examples involve:
- Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper was fined $300,000 for tossing a beverage at spectators in January 2024.
- Then Tennessee Titans proprietor Adams was issued a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a similar offensive signal.
Jones, who is recognized for his publicity flair, reportedly has an approximate wealth of $16 billion, so the penalty easily payable for the billionaire owner.
Offseason Issues and Media Spotlight
This event comes after a controversial offseason for Jones, who encountered widespread criticism from the Dallas supporters after the team traded star defensive player Micah Parsons to the Packers.
Additionally, Jones was a prominent figure in a Netflix documentary that examined his influence in building the Cowboys into the globe’s highest-worth athletic organization, even with its recent title shortcomings.
The NFL’s action to penalize Jones underscores its continuing initiative to uphold proper behavior among all franchise representatives, irrespective of their status or wealth.
