We are verifying images and video shared this morning that depict the aftermath of a reported car bomb blast that authorities in Russia say killed a high-ranking military officer in Moscow.

Russian authorities stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that detonated and that he succumbed of his wounds. A probe is under way.

Our starting point to check the site from which the pictures originated relied on social media reports saying the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.

Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to corroborate the unique yellow hue of a nearby residential complex seen in the footage.

Locating other buildings, streetlights and the street layout confirmed where the pictures were captured.

Additionally, we verified that the videos were new and that the images had not undergone manipulated.
