Former Treasury Secretary Summers Resigns from OpenAI Board

Board Resignation
The former official declared he would retreat from public roles after legislative body released his frequent messages with Jeffrey Epstein

Ex-Treasury chief Larry Summers is departing from the governing body at the artificial intelligence firm, just days after a collection of electronic messages between him and deceased financier Jeffrey Epstein became widely known.

He stated in a statement that he was "thankful for the opportunity to have served, enthusiastic about the potential of the organization, and eagerly await tracking their development".

The prominent academic, who once presided over Harvard University, announced on Monday that he would be withdrawing from public commitments due to his relationship with Epstein.

Email Communications

The newly public emails demonstrated that Summers exchanged messages with Epstein until the day before his 2019 detention for accused trafficking of underage individuals.

In a separate statement, the AI firm stated it understood the economist's choice to resign.

"We appreciate his numerous inputs and the perspective he provided to the governing body," the organization commented.

Legislative Background

This announcement comes after the two houses of Congress voted on this week to approve a bill that would compel the Department of Justice to disclose its files on the case.

The bill will afterward proceed to the administration of US President Donald Trump for signature. Trump has stated he expects to approve the bill, after modifying his view on the issue following pushback from his supporters.

Email Contents

A batch of Epstein-related emails disclosed by the House Oversight Committee days ago included multiple prominent individuals in the billionaire's former circle, without indicating any illegal behavior by those individuals.

The communications indicated that the professor and Epstein often met for meals, with the billionaire often attempting to connect the academic to influential world leaders.

Individual Statement

After the emails were made available with the general audience, he stated he assumed "complete accountability for my ill-advised judgment to maintain communicating with Mr Epstein".

He further stated that he desired "to rebuild trust and fix relationships with the persons closest to me".

Previous Positions

The economist served in leadership roles under party leaders; acting as economic leader under Bill Clinton, and as leader of the White House economic team under the former leader.

He led the institution from 2001 to 2006 and remains a professor there. When stating his step-down from public duties earlier on Monday, he stated he would persist with his academic responsibilities.

Further Repercussions

Following Summers' announcement on Monday, the Washington think tank, a left-leaning research organization in Washington where he was a senior fellow, announced that he was no longer affiliated with the group.

The former official joined the leadership of OpenAI, which creates the AI chatbot, in the previous year - following a unsuccessful effort to replace its CEO Sam Altman.
