Manchester United Poised to Secure German Forward Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich
The Women's Super League club are finalising sealing the deal for prolific Germany forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from Bayern Munich.
A Marquee Acquisition for United
The forward, with six months remaining on her deal, has been a prolific goal-getter for her club and the national team. She has scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. Her arrival will be seen as a marquee coup for the WSL team.
Her exit from Munich was expected after she was seen holding back emotions while applauding the German club’s supporters following a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
Reports in late December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its leading strikers. According to multiple sources, the formalities for the transfer are now finalised.
Consistent Goal Threat to Strengthen United's Forward Line
The 28-year-old’s signing should represent a significant boost to United’s forward line. She has been highly consistent in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.
- Over seven straight seasons, including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She claimed the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Gathering Momentum at Old Trafford
Securing Schüller’s signature comes at a time when United seem to be gathering positive momentum.
Recent performances feature qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the mid-season window has seen additional activity:
- The acquisition of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since joining in 2023.
Regarding the midfielder's new deal, a club official stated: “Miyazawa is now a vital part to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill enables her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”
Lundkvist, who has joined from a side from the American league, added: “You can feel how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and performing in the top European competition.”
