For much of the fifth and final season of *Stranger Things*, Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield are held captive inside a mental fortress built from the recollections of the villain Henry. Their quest for an escape route in episode 6 forces them to experience a defining event from Henry's early years—a discovery that could contain the key to defeating him permanently.

Unearthing the Secrets of the Mine Shaft

Upon meeting Max in the psychic realm called Camazotz, it becomes clear she is hiding out in a cave that Henry avoids at all costs. By leaving the lens cap on a viewing device found in Henry's old home lets Holly see that the true terror lies not within the cave. By aligning her view to the cut-out, she and Max plummet into a deep mine shaft.

There, they witness a Henry as a boy come across an wounded, fearful individual. Attempting assistance, the man reacts violently, striking Henry in the hand. Fighting for his life, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Was this the turning point?" Holly asks tearfully. The answer is affirmative, but the event went deeper than a simple act of survival.

A Naval Mystery and Stolen Research

*The First Shadow* opens with the legendary naval test, which reportedly teleported a warship into a plane dubbed the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the lone returnee was the captain, who returned in a catatonic condition with an altered blood type.

That survivor's offspring, a young Martin Brenner, attempted to recreate this experiment in the Nevada desert. However, a treacherous employee pilfered lab samples to give to the Russian agents, who were eager to begin their version of the tests. That traitor in the mine shaft is that employee.

Unlocking the Mystery

Based on what is understood of Brenner's work, the briefcase would assuredly have some of Captain Brenner's infected blood. As shown, Henry is bleeding from his hand. It's probable he was infected upon contact with the blood, causing the development of his psychic abilities—traits he would inadvertently transfer to the children Brenner would experiment on.

Another possibility, the case could have held dark matter that later made its way to the secret facility, where it acts to anchor the mirror dimension. The stage play explains that the boy somehow wound up in the Abyss, returning hours later with a new blood type and personality. Throughout the play, he fights the influence of a dark entity, much like how Will was controlled by the entity in season 2.

The Power of Fear

Henry's enduring terror associated with the mine shows how profoundly traumatic the encounter was for him. While he orchestrates the Hive Mind and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a part of him still exists. Fear is his tool, and the series is building toward a showdown between the monster and Will, who has overcome his own deepest fears to become stronger.

This journey has effectively disarmed Vecna. More importantly, Will now understands what Vecna himself fears, which could provide a key upper hand in the ultimate battle ahead.
