This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.

Here's a dare for long-term couples who enjoy the horror genre: Get comfortable with your partner and watch Together. This 2025 indie hit has now made its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. On the surface, it could look like standard physical horror, but beneath Together exists a deep examination about how we choose to love each other.

A Debut Feature Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for a decade. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a unique chemistry to their roles, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The narrative commences when Tim and Millie relocate from the metropolis to the countryside for professional reasons. A familiar plot device, sure, but that’s largely where the conventions end. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their new home, a storm hits, and the two discover an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a strange force starts to affect the duo. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a slow burn fright fest, weaving in elements of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes amidst something grotesque). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts neatly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Nuanced Portrayals

A great deal of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and far away from his social circle. He is terrified of the idea of totally forfeiting his individual identity in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision in Together avoids making Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

The couple confront the kind of problems that are inherent in most partnerships over a long period. At their core, they have affection for each other. They find humor with each other, offer support, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to a partner, the metaphor avoids being clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a strong argument for remaining unattached. On the other hand, some couples who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could act as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the finale sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply look at your significant other and state, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can experience right now.

Together is streaming on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
