Uche Ignites Dominant Crystal Palace Victory at Irish Side Shelbourne.
Even though embarking on their maiden European adventure, Crystal Palace are adapting very quickly. Without key players like forward Jean-Philippe Mateta and defender Daniel Muñoz, the Eagles departed Dublin with a comfortable win that virtually guarantees them a spot in the Europa Conference League qualifying rounds.
A further three points in their next match against Finnish KuPS should be sufficient to secure straight entry to the knockout stages, especially following a prior setback against Strasbourg.
Squad Members Grasp the Opportunity
This match offered a platform for some of Palace's lesser-used players to impress. Christantus Uche, making only his second beginning since arriving on loan from Getafe, notched the scoring with a well-taken finish. Forward Eddie Nketiah added a another, finding the net for the second game in match.
A Shelbourne team that had concluded their league season were no match against a largely rotated Palace lineup. The Londoners were already weakened by the reports that Mateta and Muñoz are out with knee problems.
Dominance Asserted from the Outset
In spite of torrential rain in Dublin, Palace quickly established dominance. A slick passing sequence in the 11th minute, initiated by Daichi Kamada's clever pass, let Nketiah to lay on Uche for a straightforward finish.
Midfielder Adam Wharton came close minutes later, driving a long-range shot over the bar. Nketiah subsequently claimed for a penalty after racing into the area, but the referee dismissed the appeals.
Ex-Arsenal striker didn't need to wait long to get his goal, prodding home from close range after Uche's effort had struck the post.
The home side were clinging on for dear life. Defender Kameron Ledwidge was lucky to avoid a booking for two agricultural challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards rattled the woodwork with a powerful header from a corner.
Pino Wraps Up the Game
The match was effectively over eight minutes from half-time. Yeremy Pino meandered past a series of comically weak challenges before calmly slotting a shot past keeper Wessel Speel to extend the lead to 3-0.
Following the break, coach Oliver Glasner took the chance to withdraw key individuals like Kamada and Wharton. Replacement Romain Esse almost scoring with his first touch, only to see his effort blocked.
Esse was incredibly unlucky later on, seeing one attempt strike off both posts before being gathered on the line. Uche then missed a glaring chance, indicating there is still room for improvement in his game.
The only concern for Palace was a late knock to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This allowed 17-year-old forward Benji Casey to make his senior debut, capping an otherwise perfect night for the traveling side.
