Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay technology.
Replay systems will be launched at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.
Players are granted the ability to contest particular rulings from the official, mirroring the system currently in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.
This development comes just a year after the All England Club rolled out ELC, which terminated the longstanding role of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine specific situations, including:
- Whether a ball has double-bounced.
- If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
- Potential interference end of a rally.
Notably, there is no cap on the amount of challenges a player can request.
A Recent Example
An illustrative example occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.
Draper admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.
Other Changes
A further innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.
Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
